Why August 27?
World Rock Paper Scissors Day was established to recognize the cultural and social significance of RPS as both a decision-making tool and a bridge between people. The date falls at the end of summer, when people are outdoors, at festivals, in parks, and in the kind of situations where spontaneous RPS breaks out naturally. We didn't pick the date randomly. Although that would have been on-brand.
Why RPS Deserves Its Own Day
Rock Paper Scissors is arguably the most played game in human history. Think about what it doesn't require:
- Language: The rules are communicated entirely through gesture. You can play with someone you share no spoken language with.
- Age: Children as young as 3 can learn it. It remains engaging at 80. It's the one game that works at every family reunion table.
- Culture: Known by different names everywhere: Roshambo, Jan-ken-pon, Pierre-papier-ciseaux, Piedra-papel-tijera. The rules are identical in every country.
- Equipment: Nothing. No board, no dice, no screen, no ball. Just two people and at least one hand each.
- Fairness: A perfectly balanced game with no built-in advantage for either player. On paper, anyway.
No other game on Earth can make all of those claims simultaneously. RPS is the universal human game. It has been for two thousand years. That deserves at least one day.
How to Celebrate
World RPS Day can be as simple or as elaborate as you want.

- Challenge a coworker, friend, or complete stranger to a best-of-3. Tell them it's a holiday.
- Share your best RPS story on social media with #WorldRPSDay
- Play online matches on the WRPSA platform
- Learn a strategy technique you didn't know yesterday
For Schools
- Host a classroom RPS tournament bracket
- Teach students the history of RPS across cultures (it's a two-thousand-year story)
- Use RPS to explore probability, game theory, and decision-making. It's math they'll actually enjoy.
- Run a school-wide elimination tournament during lunch. The cafeteria will never be louder.
For Organizations & Events
- Run a company-wide RPS championship. Bracket format. Prizes. The whole thing.
- Add RPS rounds as an icebreaker at conferences. It takes 30 seconds and everyone remembers it.

- Create a social media challenge and tag #WorldRPSDay
World RPS Day Events
The WRPSA hosts special events on and around August 27 each year:
- Global Online Tournament: Open to all skill levels, with divisions for beginners, intermediate, and professional players
- Community Challenges: Themed challenges like play 100 games in a day or teach 5 new people the rules (they already know the rules)
- Live Streams: Exhibition matches between top-ranked players with commentary
- Leaderboard Bonuses: Double ranking points for matches played on World RPS Day
The Bigger Picture
World Rock Paper Scissors Day celebrates a simple truth: the best games are the ones that bring people together. In a world increasingly mediated by screens and algorithms, RPS remains stubbornly, beautifully physical. Two people, face to face, counting to three, and throwing a hand sign.
Whether you're settling who pays for lunch, competing in a world championship, or sharing a moment of genuine laughter with someone you just met, Rock Paper Scissors connects us. That's worth celebrating. That's worth a holiday.
